Understanding Your Blood Test Results
Blood tests are among the most powerful diagnostic tools available to doctors. But what do all those numbers actually mean? This guide walks you through the most common blood test values.
What is a CBC?
A Complete Blood Count measures the different components of blood: red cells, white cells, hemoglobin, and platelets. Doctors use it to detect a wide range of conditions.
Key Values Explained
| Test | Normal Range | What it Measures |
|---|---|---|
| RBC | 4.5–5.5 M/μL | Red blood cells that carry oxygen |
| WBC | 4.5–11 K/μL | White blood cells that fight infection |
| Hemoglobin | 12–17 g/dL | Protein carrying oxygen in red cells |
| Platelets | 150–400 K/μL | Cells that help blood clot |
Other Common Tests
Blood Sugar (FBS): Measures glucose levels. Normal fasting: 70–99 mg/dL.
Lipid Profile: Measures cholesterol and triglycerides. Total cholesterol should be below 200 mg/dL.
Liver Function Tests (LFTs): Assess liver health via enzymes like ALT and AST.
Kidney Function Tests (KFTs): Measure creatinine and urea to assess kidney health.
If a Value is Abnormal
Don’t panic. A single abnormal value rarely indicates a serious condition. Your doctor will review your results in context of your symptoms and medical history.
